Summary

Forty years ago, the legendary manga artist Moto Hagio reinvented the shōjo (girl's comics) genre with an ongoing series of whip-smart, psychologically complex, and tenderly poetic stories。 Here now, in English for the very first time, as the debut release in Fantagraphics Books' ambitious manga line of graphic novels, are ten of the very best of these tales。

The work in A Drunken Dream and Other Stories spans Hagio's entire career, from 1970's "Bianca" to 2007's "The Willow Tree," and includes the mind-bending, full-color title story; the famously heartbreaking "Iguana Girl"; and the haunting "The Child Who Comes Home"–as well as "Autumn Journey," "Girl on Porch With Puppy," the eerie conjoined-twins shocker "Hanshin: Half-God," "Angel Mimic," and one of the saddest of all romance stories, "Marié, Ten Years Later。"

A Drunken Dream and Other Stories is supplemented with a feature-length interview with Hagio, where discusses her art, her career, and her life with the same combination of wit, candor, and warmth that radiates from every panel of her comics。

Moto Hagio is a great graphic storyteller。 This collection is made up of ten different short stories written over the course of thirty years, all of which have a different feel to them, but all are on the same general theme of estrangement: from family in most cases, but also from friends。 There is not a weak one in the collection。

Robert

The stories were uneven, like most short story collections。 BUt some were very good, giving me a generally high opinion of the collection

An interesting introduction to a star Manga artist/writer that I wasn't familiar with。 Hagio's stories are wonderfully quirky。 'Iguana Girl' was a particular standout in this collection。 An interesting introduction to a star Manga artist/writer that I wasn't familiar with。 Hagio's stories are wonderfully quirky。 'Iguana Girl' was a particular standout in this collection。 。。。more

Rated by enjoyment。 I didn’t care for this collection at first, but there were better stories toward the end in my opinion。Bianca (2 stars) Girl on the Porch with Puppy (2 stars)An interesting take on how some people, even loved ones, may want you to conform, and when you don’t, they destroy you。 Well, that’s what I got from this, anyway。Autumn Journey (3 stars)I liked the ending。Marie, Ten Years Later (2 stars)A story of shoulda, coulda, wouldasA Drunken Dream (2 stars)Ooh, this one had a burst Rated by enjoyment。 I didn’t care for this collection at first, but there were better stories toward the end in my opinion。Bianca (2 stars) Girl on the Porch with Puppy (2 stars)An interesting take on how some people, even loved ones, may want you to conform, and when you don’t, they destroy you。 Well, that’s what I got from this, anyway。Autumn Journey (3 stars)I liked the ending。Marie, Ten Years Later (2 stars)A story of shoulda, coulda, wouldasA Drunken Dream (2 stars)Ooh, this one had a burst of color。 Reincarnated, star-crossed lovers always ending in death… But it’s meh and melancholy。Hanshin: Half God (3。5/ 4ish stars)Enjoyed。Angel | Mimic (4 stars)Eh, the professor literally calls this is a “wholesome student-teacher relationship” at a women’s college。 Unfortunately, they have really good chemistry, and the male lead is classy。 The ending’s almost a tearjerker。 I like how many mangas don’t shy away from mature subject matter。Iguana Girl (4。5 stars)I liked this a lot, but y’all stay with the bs, talking about pink doesn’t suit (Riko’s) dark complexions。 Anyway, Riko is so adorable! It’s hard to see her get treated like Cinderella the whole time。 The Child Who Came Home (3 stars) The Willow Tree (3 stars)I didn’t know where this was going, but I liked it。 。。。more

Great collection of emotional stories from the renowned Moto Hagio! She crafts complex characters in engaging, whimsical tales。 Her stories range from philosophy or science fiction。 Some of my favorites are Autumn Journey, beautiful illustrations with a hopeful message。 Hanshin Half-god made me tear up and Iguana Girl gave a beautiful story of a struggling girl with self-esteem issues。 Her stories are a must-read if you are into unique stories about young women and boys。

Amanda

It's occasionally beautiful, often hallucinatory, and sometimes downright odd。 My favorite story is "The Willow Tree": told almost entirely without words, it depicts an unchanging woman standing beneath a tree as seasons and eventually years pass。 It's occasionally beautiful, often hallucinatory, and sometimes downright odd。 My favorite story is "The Willow Tree": told almost entirely without words, it depicts an unchanging woman standing beneath a tree as seasons and eventually years pass。 。。。more

Well, I'm going to have to read everything Moto Hagio ever wrote now, so next up will be The Poe Clan。 I can see why she's considered a classic manga artist; every story was interesting and the art pulled me in。 I really liked the way she handled serious themes in fantastical ways; that's my favorite kind of storytelling。 The translator, Matt Thorn, also has some great articles in the back, one laying out the history of shoujo manga and another interviewing Moto Hagio herself。 I feel like I lear Well, I'm going to have to read everything Moto Hagio ever wrote now, so next up will be The Poe Clan。 I can see why she's considered a classic manga artist; every story was interesting and the art pulled me in。 I really liked the way she handled serious themes in fantastical ways; that's my favorite kind of storytelling。 The translator, Matt Thorn, also has some great articles in the back, one laying out the history of shoujo manga and another interviewing Moto Hagio herself。 I feel like I learned a lot this way。 In particular, the one on the history of shoujo manga gave me a ton of authors and titles to check out, so I'm very excited。 I've also realized that Matt Thorn is basically leading my dream life: anthropologist? translator? writer? Clearly I need to take a few notes out of her book。 。。。more

4。5 stars - gorgeous art with emotional stories that have the common theme of grief and particularly the grief young women deal with。 Iguana Girl will always be a favorite and reading it in a physical copy was a pleasure。

This was a masterpiece。 Not all the stories pulled me in the same way, but some of them were so good that I have to give this 5 stars。 I know Hagio is famous as a shojo writer, but it's not the modern, romance heavy shojo that I am used to。 It's so complicated and tragic and honestly kind of creepy。 Everything I've read by her so far has been so unique and beautifully written。 They are all like poetry, but also filled with elements of sci-fi, fantasy, horror, tragedy and less romance than I thou This was a masterpiece。 Not all the stories pulled me in the same way, but some of them were so good that I have to give this 5 stars。 I know Hagio is famous as a shojo writer, but it's not the modern, romance heavy shojo that I am used to。 It's so complicated and tragic and honestly kind of creepy。 Everything I've read by her so far has been so unique and beautifully written。 They are all like poetry, but also filled with elements of sci-fi, fantasy, horror, tragedy and less romance than I thought。 I'll write a little bit about each story。 **slight spoilers* Bianca was a weird first one。 I was foolishly expecting fluffy romances in this book, and the first story being about a little girl dying was a jolt。 Well written, but not one of my favs。 Girl on porch with puppy was so weird。 I still liked it! I liked the art style differentiating between the girl and everyone else。 Autumn Journey, and Marie were a little more predictable and boring, but still so beautifully drawn and well written that I can't hate them。I loved A Drunken Dream! Here's where I started to really love the stories。 A nice little sci-fi story in the middle。 Hanshin was so fucking unsettling。 Deeply disturbing。 I loved it a lot but I need to stop thinking about it。 Hagio is too good at drawing creepy as hell imagery。 Angel Mimic was good, and the sort of story I was more expecting from shojo。 Iguana Girl is a masterpiece!!! Honestly this story and Hanshin were what bumped the rating to 5 stars。 Such an incredible story about self hate and mothers。 The boy who comes home was pretty regular, and I was disappointed by The Willow Tree, mostly because the blurb in the beginning said I would need tissues but I found it pretty boring and the ending didn't really get to me。 。。。more

I was tempted to give this a lower rating than 5 stars because I wasn’t that into many of the shorts - not that any of them are bad; they’re just not my thing。 But two of them really grabbed me: Girl on Porch with Puppy and The Willow Tree。I think Girl on Porch with Puppy might be among the best set of 12 pages I’ve ever looked at。

i liked the stories and there were some which i wished they were a full book

A marvelous introduction to one of the great "old school" 1970s shojo manga creators。 Hagio's art is in the old style but has elements of uniqueness, and is beautiful even with odd characters such as Iguana Girl。 Her stories are seriously unique, whether a quiet ghost story about a mother watching over her child or a science fiction tale that reaches back millenia in time。 Themes of dysfunctional families, death, and romance (both heterosexual and same-sex) run throughout。 The book starts with a A marvelous introduction to one of the great "old school" 1970s shojo manga creators。 Hagio's art is in the old style but has elements of uniqueness, and is beautiful even with odd characters such as Iguana Girl。 Her stories are seriously unique, whether a quiet ghost story about a mother watching over her child or a science fiction tale that reaches back millenia in time。 Themes of dysfunctional families, death, and romance (both heterosexual and same-sex) run throughout。 The book starts with a brief description of the women manga-ka of Hagio's era and a quietly revealing interview with her--then a reader jumps to the "back" of the book to read the actual stories in proper right-to-left manga orientation。For teen and adult manga fans who like or want to try some old manga tales and enjoy supernatural, mild horror, and/or fantasy stories。 。。。more

*spoiler free review*Like a prolific chart topping 70s pop band, Moto Hagio is one of those creators whose work you may already know and love, but never knew her name。 The film adaptation of her manga THEY WERE ELEVEN was the first feature length anime I'd ever seen - I had bought a used VHS copy at a convention when I was a kid - and had made me an instant lifelong fan of anime, but it wasn't until I more recently read the manga (collected as a 4 part mini-series by VIZ in 1995) that I knew she *spoiler free review*Like a prolific chart topping 70s pop band, Moto Hagio is one of those creators whose work you may already know and love, but never knew her name。 The film adaptation of her manga THEY WERE ELEVEN was the first feature length anime I'd ever seen - I had bought a used VHS copy at a convention when I was a kid - and had made me an instant lifelong fan of anime, but it wasn't until I more recently read the manga (collected as a 4 part mini-series by VIZ in 1995) that I knew she had created it。 If I had known, I'd of been on top of this collection when it was still in print (and more affordably priced! The secondary market is kinda steep。)But while Moto Hagio's name isn't one you'll often hear come up much in the pantheon of Western appreciation alongside Tezuka, Rumiko Takahashi, Akira Toriyama, and Otomo, she has all the same found appreciation in the West, much more so in recent years, perhaps due largely in part to more publishers like D&Q and Fantagraphics shining the light on comic works from the world with perceived literary value。 Which you'll find "literary" is an adjective used most frequently by most reviewers when describing this collection。Readers of the D&Q gekiga line may be disappointed in this collection from Fantagraphics if they are looking for more of that sharp edge found in collections like Yoshihiro Tatsumi's Abandon the Old in Tokyo, or the free-form flow of consciousness found in Seiichi Hayashi's Red Colored Elegy, but I feel like anyone else who is looking beautifully illustrated stories with themes of love, and the search for identity, that will break their heart and lift their spirits, will find this to be a worthy pickup。Authors that came to mind while reading:Andre Dubus, Anton Chekhov: Moto Hagio's stories are very heartfelt and human, concerning self doubt and self acceptance, even when exploring dark paths。 They're romantic and expressive, but not over dramatic。 The stories that most struck me in this regard were Angel and Iguana Girl。Aasimov, Rod Serling, Matheson, Shirley Jackson: several of these stories felt like like classic scifi/pulp tales - the kind that explored morality, cruelty, and prejudice, and often had unique twist endings。 Some of stories like Girl on Porch with Puppy and Half-God could've easily been episodes of The Twilight Zone。Philip K Dick: Moto Hagio shares his themes of isolation (being the outsider), the search for identity, and even a little paranoia - all themes Shirley Jackson shared too。 These run throughout the whole book to varying degrees。Just overall, this book is a gem, one which I imagine I will revisit again and again。 。。。more

Some of the stories were really intriguing (such as the ones about the conjoined twins and the “iguana girl”), but I was pretty underwhelmed for the most part, sad to say。

Amanda

It was beautiful but it had serious melancholy。

A wonderful collection of comic shorts that are strange, sad, and introspective。 These stories and the interview demonstrate how seminal Hagio is in shoujo manga。

I've never read manga of any kind so this may be an uninformed view but these stories are so original, and that combined with the beautiful but then comedic visual style makes for a great collection。 These are my favorites, not including the random panel in the middle of Bianca where (the author presumably) draws a non sequitur about her headstrong cat。"Girl on Porch with Puppy" "Marié, Ten Years Later" "Hanshin: Half God" "Iguana Girl" I've never read manga of any kind so this may be an uninformed view but these stories are so original, and that combined with the beautiful but then comedic visual style makes for a great collection。 These are my favorites, not including the random panel in the middle of Bianca where (the author presumably) draws a non sequitur about her headstrong cat。"Girl on Porch with Puppy" "Marié, Ten Years Later" "Hanshin: Half God" "Iguana Girl" 。。。more

his book is a collection of Moto Hagio's better known short stories。 Moto Hagio is an instrumental figure in the Japanese "woman's comics" movement。 Her stories tend to focus on darker emotions, often those of feeling "not pretty enough" or otherwise inadequate when compared to other women。 Some of these stories date back to the 1970's so the art feels a bit dated。 *Iguana Girl* was my favorite story in this collection。 his book is a collection of Moto Hagio's better known short stories。 Moto Hagio is an instrumental figure in the Japanese "woman's comics" movement。 Her stories tend to focus on darker emotions, often those of feeling "not pretty enough" or otherwise inadequate when compared to other women。 Some of these stories date back to the 1970's so the art feels a bit dated。 *Iguana Girl* was my favorite story in this collection。 。。。more

Fantagraphics jumps on D&Q's manga bandwagon, translating an influential but not mainstream creator's short stories for American readers - I prefer Tatsumi's work, but Hagio's is interesting。 Lots of sci-fi/fantasy type stuff with an undercurrent of melancholy, screwed up family structures, loss and/or abuse。 It's definitely worth a look。 Fantagraphics jumps on D&Q's manga bandwagon, translating an influential but not mainstream creator's short stories for American readers - I prefer Tatsumi's work, but Hagio's is interesting。 Lots of sci-fi/fantasy type stuff with an undercurrent of melancholy, screwed up family structures, loss and/or abuse。 It's definitely worth a look。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this collection。 While not all the stories grabbed me, the ones that did held fast and refused to let go even after I'd put the book down。 It was fascinating reading these, as this sort of narrative is sorely missing from today's manga industry。 Moto Hagio's works are complex and physiologically interesting。 They're open to interpretation, but tackle subjects such as grief, abuse, and loneliness in raw detail。 I had a great time reading these, and any fan of manga with deeper me I really enjoyed this collection。 While not all the stories grabbed me, the ones that did held fast and refused to let go even after I'd put the book down。 It was fascinating reading these, as this sort of narrative is sorely missing from today's manga industry。 Moto Hagio's works are complex and physiologically interesting。 They're open to interpretation, but tackle subjects such as grief, abuse, and loneliness in raw detail。 I had a great time reading these, and any fan of manga with deeper meaning will feel the same way。 。。。more

Outstanding。 Beautiful art but most importantly, the stories were meaningful。 Moto Hagio's storytelling is a little different - I get a kind of eerie vibe from some of the stories。 But that's a positive thing! She creates magnificent stories with depth even though they aren't very long。 I think she does an incredible job crafting these worlds and characters I sympathize with even though I've only known them a short while。 Just all around fantastic。 Outstanding。 Beautiful art but most importantly, the stories were meaningful。 Moto Hagio's storytelling is a little different - I get a kind of eerie vibe from some of the stories。 But that's a positive thing! Excellent collection of shorter Manga from throughout Moto Hagio's 4-decade career。 It's fascinating to see Hagio's line work and storytelling skills develop as her core obsessions (so many dopplegangers and distant mothers!) remain in place。 The Fantagraphics hardcover includes a long, revealing interview with Hagio and an essay about the "Magnificent 49ers", the female-centered Manga scene of which Hagio is a key member。 These are both useful resources, but I would have preferred more detailed Excellent collection of shorter Manga from throughout Moto Hagio's 4-decade career。 It's fascinating to see Hagio's line work and storytelling skills develop as her core obsessions (so many dopplegangers and distant mothers!) remain in place。 The Fantagraphics hardcover includes a long, revealing interview with Hagio and an essay about the "Magnificent 49ers", the female-centered Manga scene of which Hagio is a key member。 These are both useful resources, but I would have preferred more detailed bibliographic information on when and where the stories collected in this edition originally appeared。 。。。more
